One great way to communicate what Elgg can do is by showing them what other people have done. One of the first questions I asked when talking to our LMS folks was "is Elgg actually used by anyone else?" I have to admit I fumbled a bit. Fortunately I knew about Brighton and U of Florida, but I had to be honest -- I would have quickly run dry.
This would also be a great way to show off the theming capabilities of Elgg, which are not super obvious right now (those keeping up with 1.8 know, but not your average joe stumbling on the site). Too many Elgg sites look just like the stock Elgg install and it feels very unprofessional. We need to highlight those that have put effort into making outstanding custom themes. This of course has dual benefit for both Elgg and those websites.
" is Elgg actually used by anyone else? "
weelll ;o we got 1/4 million kids all over the world that see the 'powered by elgg' logo/link logging in everyday fkkids.com still elgg.1.5 clunky crappy theme, but seems like 1/4 million kids just do not acre abt all those snazzy web2,3 themes etc coz they're having fun which is all that a web site is about, isn't it? i.e. what if they built a web.3 super snazzy themed website in elgg and nobody came ? the customer's always right.. y'all want some advice/help? ask!
